2.642 Water - Skana - SGI (Mayne)
The Skana Water System provides drinking water to a community of approximately 85 lots located near the north east end of Mayne Island. The system obtains its drinking water from a well field. The water treatment process for the system consists of disinfection using ultraviolet light and free chlorine (sodium hypochlorite).
In 2003, the local community requested the CRD Board to hold a referendum to establish a water supply system covering the Skana Water Works Ltd (#124732) area. The referendum passed, and in 2004 the CRD Board adopted Bylaw No 3089 which established a Service to operate the supply, conveyance, treatment, storage and distribution of water, called the Skana Water Service. The CRD took over the private utility works and commenced upgrading and operation of the Service. The service continues to be authorized and administered under Bylaw 3089.
A Commission, made up of local residents and property owners, and the SGI Electoral Area Director, provides community input for the delivery of the water service. This service is managed and operated by the CRD Integrated Water Services Department.
The budget for this service is established through an annual CRD Financial Planning process, and is funded by connection charges and then through annual parcel taxes and water user fees levied in the local service area.
