The Ent is part of a series of ‘tree portraits’ painted at Eden Grove, near Port Renfrew, BC in Pacheedaht Territory. The painting depicts a cedar tree over 1,000 years old.
We have only the remnants of our ancient rainforests left on the BC Coast. Our massive 1,000 - 2,000 year-old firs and cedars and the forests they sustain are an irreplaceable world heritage. I was located just a few hundred metres up the logging road from the Eden Grove Protection Camp which was established as part of a network of blockades initiated by the Rainforest Flying Squad in 2020. These camps protect this site and others including Fairy Creek, Walbran, Camper Creek and Caycuse River. The objective of the blockades is to stop the destruction of these last remaining, delicate ecosystems on southern Vancouver Island and for the government of BC to observe the recommendations of the Old Growth Strategic Review, which it commissioned and promised to follow.
