Victoria, BC– The Capital Regional District (CRD) has completed restoration of the Todd Creek Trestle along the Galloping Goose Regional Trail near Sooke Potholes Regional Park. This 4-story wooden trestle is over 100 years old and is a landmark of the former rail line that ran from Victoria to Leechtown. This restoration work adds an additional 35-50 years to the life span of the structure. The trestle is now open to the public for use.
The trestle is considered a valuable asset to the regional trails system and to visitors’ experience. The cost of this project is estimated at $1,700,000. CRD staff assessed repair options with engineers and determined restoring the trestle as the best approach to maintain its historical value. Work on the trestle began in October 2019 and was delayed due to COVID-19, inclement weather and unforeseen structural challenges.
The Todd Creek Trestle makes up part of the over 100kms in the regional trail system. The Galloping Goose Regional Trail on which the trestle resides is a picturesque multi-use trail that moves through urban, rural and wilderness scenery on its 55-kilometre journey from Victoria to Sooke.
The Todd Creek trestle was built in 1917 as part of the Canadian National Railway. It was decommissioned as a rail line in 1984. It offers expansive forest and river views and is recognized as an attraction along the trail. The two per cent grade makes the trail accessible for all ages and abilities.
