Maliview wastewater system infrastructure upgrade

Mar 08, 2021

Salt Spring Island, BC– The Capital Regional District (CRD) is engaging with local ratepayers of the Maliview Sewer Service Area on plans and funding options for upgrades to the Maliview wastewater system. An upgrade is required because the system has reached the end of its service life and is no longer compliant with provincial requirements, federal wastewater regulations and the Fisheries Act.

The total estimated cost to renew the system back to a safe, reliable state that meets regulatory requirements is approximately $2.21 million (in 2020). The CRD has applied for federal and provincial grant funding for up to 90% of the project cost. If successful, this will reduce the required borrowing to $210,000. If the grant is not successful, the capital upgrade is still required. The estimated new debt will be funded from 94 lots within the service area.

Virtual open houses for Maliview ratepayers are scheduled for the following dates and times:

  • Tuesday March 23, 2021 – 10am to 12pm
  • Wednesday March 24, 2021 – 6pm to 8pm
  • Thursday March 25, 2021 – 10am to 12pm

The electoral assent process will be used to obtain approval for borrowing. This process will be explained at the open house. Maliview ratepayers are also encouraged to complete an online feedback form to provide input on borrowing amounts and options.

Information about the Maliview wastewater system infrastructure upgrade, including project updates, a feedback form and links to register for the virtual open houses can all be found at www.crd.bc.ca/maliview.
