Victoria, BC– With support and funding from Greater Victoria Canadian Tire Dealers, Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities is gifting the Peninsula Recreation Commission a 13,200 square foot Jumpstart Inclusive Multisport Court through its Inclusive Play Project. The decision to partner was made by the Peninsula Recreation Commission at the March 25, 2021 meeting.

The project total is estimated at $1.2 million. Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities is providing the inclusive multisport court in addition to supporting some of the site preparation costs.  Subject to a budget approved by the Capital Regional District (CRD) board, the remaining $663,461 will come from the Peninsula Recreation Commission’s capital plan for the site preparation, playground relocation, surfacing upgrades, design and permit fees and project management.

The Jumpstart Inclusive Multisport Court will be located at Panorama Recreation Centre in North Saanich, BC and feature:

  • Sport and para sport court lines for basketball, tennis, ball hockey, volleyball, pickleball and badminton
  • Adjustable basketball nets
  • High contrast four-square court and hop-scotch play area
  • Contrasting colours to support visual impairment
  • Shaded double-wide benches for improved accessibility
  • Wheelchair-accessible seating and tables
  • Shaded accessible bleachers
  • Cushion Comfort Plus Laykold acyclic surfacing system

The shared Jumpstart Inclusive Multisport Court is designed for a variety of sports and will allow accessible programming for all ages.  It also meets the needs expressed by the local community during the engagement process from the 2016-2020 strategic plan.

“Panorama Recreation is grateful for this gift as it will allow us to continue providing programs and opportunities for our community.  The multisport court will be a welcome addition to our list of already inclusive facilities including the aquatic center, water slide, and playground.” Ted Daly, Chair, Peninsula Recreation Commission.

“Outdoor recreational spaces are important now, more than ever,” said Scott Fraser, President, Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities. “With support from our Greater Victoria Canadian Tire Dealers, we’re delighted to bring a Jumpstart Inclusive Multisport Court to the community for kids and youth to safely enjoy the benefits of sport and play, no matter their ability or circumstance.”

The Jumpstart Inclusive Multisport Court is part of the Charity’s commitment to inclusive play and development of accessible, inclusive play spaces for kids of all abilities.
