Grants support equity, growth and development in arts & culture

Jun 01, 2021

Victoria, BC– The Capital Regional District (CRD) Arts Commission has approved $69, 000 in funding for 20 local not-for-profit arts organizations through the Arts & Culture Support Service’s Equity, IDEA and Incubator grant programs.

“Funding recipients put forward impressive proposals that promise to benefit underserved artistic communities in particularly challenging times,” says CRD Arts Commission Chair Jeremy Loveday. “Moreover the projects funded will support the development of a more vibrant and inclusive regional arts ecosystem.”

Equity and IDEA (Innovate, Develop, Experiment, Access) grants aim to reach a broader representation of the artistic community in the region and remove barriers to public sector arts funding, while Incubator grants assist in the development of new arts projects in order to enhance the sustainability and resiliency of regional arts.

Grants will support a wide-variety of art initiatives including theatre workshops supporting the Filipino-Canadian community, Healing Drum sessions, an art installation in Victoria Native Friendship Centre’s Bruce Parisian Library, contemporary dance performances engaging Indigenous communities from South Vancouver Island, and the development of a play transcript about the experiences of formerly incarcerated people released during the COVID-19 pandemic. “While these grants may begin to address the many barriers associated with arts funding, we recognize this is part of a much larger picture,” says Loveday. “To further address systemic barriers associated with CRD arts funding, the Arts Commission made a commitment in January 2021 to apply an equity lens to CRD’s Arts & Culture operations and granting.”

The approved grants meet the CRD’s mandate to support, promote and celebrate arts and culture. The CRD Arts & Culture Support Service is supported by Saanich, Victoria, Oak Bay, Esquimalt, View Royal, Highlands, Metchosin, Sooke and Southern Gulf Islands.
