Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program Funding for Magic Lake Estates Wastewater Infrastructure Replacement Project

Oct 20, 2021

Victoria, BC– The Capital Regional District (CRD) will receive funding through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program – Green Infrastructure Environmental Quality Stream. The $5.65M contribution will enable the completion of infrastructure upgrades to the Magic Lake Estates Wastewater System on North Pender Island, in the Southern Gulf Islands Electoral Area. The community of Magic Lake Estates is primarily a rural residential development which was originally serviced by a private sewer utility and in 1981 the service transferred to the CRD.

The wastewater system provides service to approximately 700 properties. In 2011, a consultant’s report confirmed that much of the infrastructure was nearing end of life. Key recommendations from the report included upgrades to the treatment plant, renewal of six lift stations, and the replacement of failing sewer pipes in order to comply with the Ministry of Environment requirements. To date, about 3 km of sewer pipe has been completed and next steps include preparing a Request for Proposals for pump station and treatment plant upgrades. Construction of the remaining upgrades is expected to commence in late summer 2022 and be completed by January 2024.

The CRD thanks the governments of Canada and British Columbia for the approved funding through the ICIP-EQ Program.
