CRD to gather input on regional transportation governance

Jun 14, 2023

Victoria, BC– The Capital Regional District Board has directed staff to engage with local governments, electoral areas, the province, and relevant partner agencies including the Island Corridor Foundation, to gather their input on transportation governance.

The province, region and local governments have set ambitious climate action and transportation targets, which to be achieved, require coordinated and active efforts from all parties. While much is being done, in the absence of a unified and coordinated approach funding is unavailable.

"We know that people in this region live and work across municipal boundaries and want to move around the region easily. We also know that residents expect quality service, regardless of who delivers it," said Colin Plant, CRD Board Chair. "The status quo is not enough. We have our priorities and need more tools to implement them. We need to hear directly from our partners about what they think."

The CRD has confirmed regional transportation priorities. A collaborative approach will help identify any changes needed to optimize our governance model and enhance the overall transportation experience across all modes. The information will help inform decisions around future transportation governance that will best enable the region to meet its transportation mode share and greenhouse gas reduction targets.

The CRD delivers regional, sub-regional and local services to 13 municipalities and three electoral areas on southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. Governed by a 24-member Board of Directors, the CRD works collaboratively with First Nations and government partners to enable sustainable growth, foster community well-being, and develop cost-effective infrastructure while continuing to provide core services to residents throughout the region.
