Description

Project Overview:

The Capital Regional District (CRD) and Peninsula Recreation Commission (PRC) are excited to announce the replacement of the existing lacrosse box at Centennial Park in Saanichton with a new, state-of-the-art covered multi-sport box. This upgrade will transform the current facility into a versatile, weather-resistant space designed to accommodate a variety of sports and recreational activities year-round. The new facility will be modeled after the successful multi-sport box built at Harewood Park in Nanaimo.

 Key Features:

  • Multi-Sport Use: The new box will be designed to host a range of sports, including lacrosse, pickleball, ball hockey, and more, providing a flexible space for community activities.
  • Covered Structure: A durable roof will protect the playing surface from the elements, ensuring the facility can be used in all weather conditions and extending its usability throughout the year.
  • Enhanced Playing Surface: The playing surface will be upgraded to new asphalt with an acrylic coating, providing a durable, safe, and high-quality surface suitable for multiple sports.
  • Improved Lighting: Modern LED lighting will be installed to enable evening and nighttime use, making the facility more accessible for various schedules.
  • Accessibility Features: The new design will incorporate accessibility features to ensure that people of all abilities can enjoy the facility.

 Community Benefits:

  • Year-Round Usage: The covered design will protect the facility from rain and sun, allowing for continuous use throughout the year, regardless of weather conditions.
  • Versatility: By supporting multiple sports and activities, the new box will serve a wider segment of the community, encouraging diverse recreational opportunities.
  • Health and Wellness: The multi-sport box will provide a safe and engaging environment for physical activity, promoting health and wellness among community members of all ages.
  • Community Engagement: The facility will become a hub for local events, sports leagues, and recreational programs, fostering community spirit and engagement.

The sport box project is budgeted at $4.9 million. $2 million comes from a grant the District of Central Saanich received from the Federal Government Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. The remaining $2.9 million from the Peninsula Recreation Commission (PRC) Capital Plan which is part of the Capital Regional District (CRD) financial plan.
