Description
New Development Proposed for Central Saanich
The Capital Region Housing Corporation’s (CRHC) newest proposed development at 1183 Verdier Avenue in Central Saanich, is a multi-unit residential building with underground parking. The Verdier project will offer a significant increase in affordable rental housing in the capital region and for Central Saanich.
The mixed-use project will also provide approximately 2000 sq ft of commercial space and the CRHC is proposing to use this space as a daycare which would provide an additional benefit to the community. This mixed-use development is the first project of its kind for the CRHC who will manage the new homes and provide space for a childcare provider to operate on the site.
This project will align with the Central Saanich Official Community Plan (OCP) land use designation of Multi-Unit Residential and policies that support mixed-use development in the core commercial areas, including Brentwood Bay Village. The site is surrounded by several neighbourhood amenities and is located on an existing cycling, pedestrian, and transit route.
Additional engagement will be sought with other interested parties like local First Nations.
The building will be designed to a minimum of a BC Energy Step Code — Step 3 which targets a minimum 20 per cent reduction in energy consumption and Greenhouse Gas emissions. In addition, it is anticipated that the building will be fully electric and designed to EL-4, Zero Carbon Performance as part of the Zero Carbon Step Code. Funding partnerships are being sought, and updates will be provided as funding is secured.
