Don’t throw away your family’s old china or dishware. Beautiful things are meant to be used, so instead of buying new dishes, pull out the “best” china and give it some air. Need more plates for a big event? Try one of the many second hand or thrift stores around town, buying used instead of disposable.
Donate items in good condition to a charity, community group, school or church (keeping in mind that these groups can’t use items that need to be repaired) or offer it for free online through social media or an online classifieds service. Consider repairing items whenever possible instead of purchasing new.

Most ceramic and china is clay or bone based, with other minerals added for strength. Newer varieties can be made of pyrex, which is a type of glass, or other materials. None are particularly hazardous for the environment, but there other options superior to landfilling these bulky items.
