How do I go green?

If you are using fluorescent or LED bulbs, you are already reducing by using these high efficiency bulbs to light your space. Just don't forget to switch off when you leave the room.

There are few practical options for reuse of light bulbs and tubes.

Not all facilities listed below are part of the provincial program and may charge a fee for drop off. Contact facilities directly regarding restrictions and charges.

Also accepted are accidentally broken, residential-use, compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) and fluorescent tubes in sealed plastic bags or sealed glass containers. If you do break a fluorescent bulb, place the broken item in a sealed plastic bag or a sealed glass container and take it to a nearby depot.

  • The Environmental Story

Once professionally disassembled, the component parts of fluorescent tubes are all recyclable. The tube can be used to manufacture fiberglass. The ballasts or ends can be smelted down for reuse; and the mercury carefully distilled and reused.

    Did You Know?

Fluorescent bulbs and tubes do contain mercury. Mercury exposure can be highly toxic.
