What would you like to Recycle?

Paint

Paint
Paint is collected free of charge at over 200 designated recycling areas across BC as part of the legislated Product Stewardship program coordinated by Product Care Recycling. An eco fee is included in the cost each time a paint can is purchased to cover the cost of safe disposal or recycling. A full list of what is accepted and free drop off locations is available on their website.

If you have more than 10 cans of paint or 50 aerosol cans to drop off, use the program designed specifically for industrial users who generate large volumes of paint; it helps prevent recycling locations from becoming overwhelmed.

How do I go green?

Ask your paint retailer to help estimate how much paint your project will require. If you have paint left over, apply another coat to an area which could use extra protection. Mix smaller quantities of leftover latex paint together for use as a primer coat on a larger project. Keep a small amount of paint on hand for touch-ups.

Do you have a quantity of paint that is usable? Maybe your friends or family could use it. If not, bring to the paint exchange at the Hartland Depot.

Not all facilities listed below are part of the provincial program and may charge a fee for drop off. Contact facilities directly regarding restrictions and charges.

  • The Environmental Story

House paint, a petroleum based product, can contain up to 1500 different petrochemicals, which are toxic when in liquid and drying form. These volatile organic compounds (VOCs) contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. Some companies offer paint that uses clay and natural oils as a base, rather than petroleum. Look for paint first at a paint exchange before buying new.
