What would you like to Recycle?

Treated Wood

plywood, painted wood, pressure treated wood, stained wood, wooden furniture, engineered wood products, wood fencing, wood doors
Treated Wood

Treated wood can be painted, stained or pressure treated and contain nails or other metal fasteners. Products consist of engineered wood (plywood, particle board, laminated wood), wood furniture, wood fencing, wood shingles, wood doors, etc. If the item is composite, like a couch or upholstered chair, it is garbage.

Effective July 2, 2024, treated wood will be accepted at Hartland Landfill for recycling or energy recovery. Treated wood must arrive separated from other materials and be dropped off in a designated area as directed by staff. Read the media release or factsheet for more details.

How do I go green?

Try to make the most out of each piece of wood and only buy what you need. This will save you money as well as reduce the amount of wood required for your project.

Save the good sections from a renovation or demo. Take out the nails etc. and reuse what you can. Try selling wooden furniture or re-useable pieces of wood online or give away to neighbours or family who have a use for it. Learn more about where to take furniture for reuse.

Be aware that most recycling facilities cannot accept creosote or lumber that has lead based paint on it. Contact facilities directly regarding restrictions and charges.

Hartland Depot requires wood from renovation projects such as wood subflooring or wood studs removed from underneath drywall, plaster or stucco to have a pre-approval application. For more information visit the Reno & Demo page.

  • The Environmental Story

Contrary to popular belief, wood that ends up in a landfill does not simply biodegrade and create soil. It actually generates harmful, polluting gases if allowed to rot. Wood in a landfill also represents a lost resource. You can make the educated eco-choice by finding out where to best dispose of your wood, where it can be chipped and recycled.
