Boil Water Advisory: Highland-Fernwood Water System (SSI)

Oct 28, 2024 (updated Oct 28, 2024, 1:31pm)

Residents in the impacted area should BOIL their drinking water until further notice.

The Capital Regional District (CRD), in consultation with Island Health, has issued a Boil Water Advisory for a portion of the Highland-Fernwood Water System Water System on Salt Spring Island. Residents on the following roads should boil their water until further notice – Maliview Drive, Fer de Lance Road, Westcott Road, Hedger Road and Walker’s Hook Road (see map).

Water service to approximately 70 households within the Highland-Fernwood Water System was interrupted following a decrease in water pressure due to a leak in the distribution system. Repairs are underway but water quality may have been compromised during this event.

As a precaution, the Boil Water Advisory will be in effect until flushing and water samples indicate the water quality no longer poses a risk to public health. Residents in the impacted area should BOIL their drinking water until further notice.

The boil water advisory will be removed when Island Heath is satisfied that the drinking water does not pose a health concern and issues an ‘ALL CLEAR’ notice at which time the impacted customers will be notified. During the water advisory household tap water may be disinfected by boiling it vigorously for one minute.

All residents serviced by the Highland-Fernwood Water System are asked to continue to conserve water to recover reservoir levels lost through the break. There may be a need to reduce flows or shut off the water again to complete further repairs.
