Permits, Pre-Approvals and Appointments

Landfilling of certain types of waste can have health and safety concerns for staff, create nuisance, or have environmental concerns. These wastes may require special handling, testing, permits, pre-approvals or appointments before being brought to Hartland.

Renovation and Demolition Waste

Before starting renovation or demolition work, review which materials require testing, which materials are not accepted and which materials require pre-approvals, permits or appointments.

Asbestos Waste

Asbestos containing materials (ACM) are accepted. Test results and appointments are required and loads must follow specified packaging and disposal requirements.

Controlled Waste

Controlled wastes require special handling and are disposed of in designated trenches and covered daily to minimize nuisance, odours, and scavenging by birds. Controlled waste requires a permit for disposal.

2025 Tipping Changes

Effective January 2, 2025 the general refuse, controlled waste and asbestos tipping fees will increase at Hartland Landfill. Read the media release  for more details.

Material Sorting Rules

Clean wood (pallets, lumber off-cuts), treated wood (painted, stained, engineered wood products) and asphalt shingles are banned from being disposed of as garbage. Materials must arrive separated at Hartland Landfill, otherwise fines are in effect. Read the factsheet for more details.
