Hartland Landfill

Hartland landfill is owned and operated by the CRD and is located about 14km northwest of Victoria. It is the only solid waste disposal facility in the Capital Region, serving about 440,000 people. Hartland receives about 180,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste per year. The operation is a multi-purpose facility providing collection for recycling, household hazardous waste, salvageable items as well as yard and garden waste collection and processing, controlled waste disposal and landfill service to commercial and residential customers.

Our most recent calculations indicate that at present filling rates, current design capacity is expected to be reached in 2100.

Learn About Hartland Landfill

Why is Hartland a landfill and not a dump? Hartland landfill began as an unregulated dump site in the mid-1950s. In 1985, the CRD took over operation of the site. Since that time, over $33 million has been invested in site infrastructure and environmental controls. Due to these improvements, Hartland is no longer a dump, but an engineered sanitary landfill.

New Material Sorting Rules

Effective July 2, 2024 asphalt shingles and treated wood (painted, stained engineered wood products) will not be accepted as regular garbage. Separated loads of treated wood and separated loads of asphalt shingles will be accepted for recycling or energy recovery at a reduced tipping fee. Cover Your Load

All loads must be covered and secured in order to reduce litter on roadways. Vehicles arriving with uncovered and/or unsecured loads will be charged double the normal fee or be subject to a fine.

Safety

Customers and visitors are required to comply with all posted site regulations. Because of the presence of mobile equipment, visitors to the active face area are required to wear high visibility apparel and safety boots. Also, due to the risk of fire and the presence of landfill gas, smoking is strictly prohibited. Fines are in effect.
