Rates and Accepted Items

Hartland accepts many recyclable and reusable materials for free, and other materials by pay-by-weight. Review the individual drop-down categories for specific material rates and items. For an outline of accepted items and rates, review the following:

For pay-by-weight items, your vehicle is weighed before and after dumping. Payment is calculated on the weight difference.

Example: 250 kgs (550 lbs) of garbage at $150/tonne = $47.50 ($37.50 + $10 bin user fee)

Note:

  • New: Effective January 2, 2025 the general refuse tipping fee will increase from $150/tonne to $155/tonne. Read the media release for more details.
  • Reminder: Clean wood (pallets, crating and lumber off-cuts), treated wood (painted, stained engineered wood products) and asphalt are banned from general refuse. Materials must arrive separated and staff will direct you to a designated drop off location. If loads are mixed with other materials, fines are in effect. 
  • All loads must be covered and secured (penalties in effect).

    Recycling & Reusable Items

    Most recycling and reusable items are accepted at no charge. Detailed list of no charge items.

    Recyclables

    Residential recycling: Free (except for tires on rims)

    Business recycling: $26 (for packaging items and tires on rims)

    Reusable Items

    Some items can be brought to Hartland's Public Drop-off Depot for free to be reused.

    • Clothing (reuseable condition, dry and bagged)
    • Bicycles
    • Paint (fuller cans of new paint)

    General Refuse

    Bulky Waste

    General refuse items greater than 1.5 m3 in volume or 2.5m (8') in length.

    • Yard and garden material (less than 3"dia) - $59/tonne, $10 minimum
    • Branches and stumps (greater than 3" dia) - $110/tonne, $10 minimum

    • Knotweed (with a controlled waste permit) - $59/tonne, $10 minimum

    Kitchen Scraps

    Kitchen scraps are accepted during regular operating hours (Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm and Saturdays 7am-2pm).

    Registered account customers outfitted with RFID tags have additional access to the kitchen scraps transfer station between 7am - 9am Monday to Friday.

      Mattresses and Box Springs

      Mattresses and box springs are collected in the public drop-off depot at Hartland.

      Clean Wood

      More Information

      • Clean wood is untreated, unstained, and unpainted and can contain nails or other metal fasteners.
      • Products are limited to lumber, pallets/skids and crating.
      • Clean wood is banned from general refuse (effective January 2, 2024).

      Treated Wood and Wood Products

      More Information

      • New: Treated wood is banned from general refuse (effective July 2, 2024). 
      • Treated wood can be painted, stained or pressure treated and contain nails or other metal fasteners.
      • Products consist of engineered wood (plywood, particle board, laminated wood), wood furniture, wood fencing, wood shingles, wood doors, etc.
      • Wood from renovation projects such as wood subflooring or wood studs removed from underneath drywall, plaster or stucco requires a pre-approval application. For more information visit our Reno & Demo page.

      Asphalt Shingles

      More Information

      • New: Asphalt shingles are banned from general refuse (effective July 2, 2024). 
      • Asphalt roofing shingles are composed of a felt mat saturated with asphalt with small rock granules added. Tar paper/felt paper can be mixed with loads of asphalt shingles.
      • This material category does not include tar and gravel roofing. 
      • Multiple layers of asphalt shingles requires a pre-approval application. For more information visit our Reno & Demo page.

      Renovation and Demolition Material (application required)

      Clean (non-asbestos containing) renovation waste is accepted from small residential loads through a pre-approval application. Clean demolition materials are accepted from commercial or self-tipping loads through a clean demolition permit.

      Asbestos Containing Material (appointment required)

      Asbestos containing material is accepted at Hartland when properly packaged, with required test results and an appointment. Appointments are available Monday to Friday 9am-2pm.

      RVs, Campers and Boats (permit required)

      Disposal of RVs, camper trailers and boats requires a controlled waste permit and appointment. RVs, camper trailers and boats must be stripped of all banned materials prior to arriving at Hartland for disposal. Residential customers can book appointments Monday to Friday 9am-2pm. Commercial customers with an RFID tag can book appointments Monday to Friday 7am-2pm.

      Controlled Waste (permit required)

      Disposal of controlled waste at Hartland Landfill requires a permit and appointment. Residential customers can book appointments Monday to Friday 9am-2pm. Commercial customers with an RFID tag can book appointments Monday to Friday 7am-2pm.

      Examples of controlled wastes include dead animals, catchbasin waste, health hazard waste, fibre optic cable, pumpings, surface coating waste, spent charcoal, vehicle washing facility waste, soot and ash, screenings and large quantities of animal fecal waste.

      $157 to $500/tonne, depending on material. 

      2025 Rates

      $214 to $500/tonne, depending on material.

      2025 Tipping Changes

      Effective January 2, 2025 the general refuse, controlled waste and asbestos tipping fees will increase at Hartland Landfill. Read the media release  for more details.

      Material Sorting Rules

      Clean wood (pallets, lumber off-cuts), treated wood (painted, stained, engineered wood products) and asphalt shingles are banned from being disposed of as garbage. Materials must arrive separated at Hartland Landfill, otherwise fines are in effect. Read the factsheet for more details.

      Feedback Wanted For Expanded Hours Pilot

      Hartland Landfill’s new Saturday hours are 7am to 5pm, adding three extra hours (2pm - 5pm) for a one-year pilot period.

      Cover Your Load

      All loads must be covered and secured in order to reduce litter on roadways. Vehicles arriving with uncovered and/or unsecured loads will be charged double the normal fee or be subject to a fine.

      Accepted Payment Methods

      Cash, debit, Visa, MasterCard and cheque are acceptable payment methods. Please note that cash is the fastest payment method.
